During the last years, mass spectrometry has revolutionized protein biochemistry and has advanced to a superior tool for the identification and detailed analysis of peptides and proteins. The high throughput allowed by some mass spectrometry platforms has enabled the important step from analysis of individual proteins towards proteomics. Recently, an additional field of mass spectrometry applications has emerged - namely clinical research applications. The criteria of higher throughput and easy operation are especially fulfilled by state of the art matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) instruments. This development has led to applications in profiling of complex biomarker patterns to detect molecular fingerprints for specific diseases in biological samples. Thus, mass spectrometry based methods have the potential to enable an early analysis of diseases with minimally invasive methods of investigation. Bruker DaltonicsĀ“ CLINPROT system allows to detect predictive biomarker patterns by profiling of biological samples and to identify potential biomarker peptides by TOF/TOF analysis. Additional the MALDI Molecular Imager allows to monitor the spatial distribution of biomarkers in tissue sections and to correlate the data with classical histological staining. Even a classification of diseased tissue regions, for example in tumor analysis, can be performed. Moreover, for microbiological projects an identification of microbial species via mass spectrometry analysis is enabled on the same instrument platform (MALDI BioTyper).
