Abstract:

The Swedish Human Protein Atlas project is a multi-disciplinary research project, initiated in 2003 by researchers at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm and the Rudbeck Laboratory, Uppsala University. It’s a systematic exploration of the human proteome using antibody-based tissue proteomics, combining HT-generation of affinity-purified antibodies with protein profiling in human tissues and cells using tissue microarrays. Analysis of protein expression patterns is performed on tissue and cell microarrays containing >700 spots of normal and cancer tissues as well as in vitro cultured cells. The results are presented in a publicly available database (www.proteinatlas.org) containing images and data from the protein profiling. Each image has been manually annotated and curated by a certified pathologist to provide a knowledge base for functional studies, allowing searches and queries about protein profiles in normal and disease tissue.
