Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization - imaging mass spectrometry (MALDI-IMS) is a powerful and diverse technology that visualizes the molecular profile of a tissue sample. Distribution maps of thousands analytes can be correlated with histological and clinical features of a section. It is capable to image wide range of molecules, including drugs, metabolites, lipids and proteins. Unlike classical histology, MALDI-IMS is a label-free technique that antibodies, fluorescent dye or radiolabels, are not necessary.
MALDI-IMS can be used for both targeted and non-targeted analysis. A typical example is tracing of drug and its metabolites distribution in tissue. Combined with microscopic information, this opens an entirely a new level of histopharmacology. MALDI-IMS has also been successfully applied to the detection of previously unknown protein biomarkers in cancer. MALDI-IMS retains spatial and histological information comparing with liquid-based approaches. MALDI-IMS is perfectly suited for drug mechanism, clinical cancer research and other histological & pathological applications.
